I received a note from Kristan ( Kristen ? ) today, it's not right in front of me, but the gist of it was .. like many others she is fed up. So many had felt that shown the evidence of danger and harm , the City would stand up for it's citizens. We were all there during the entire 4 meetings that WC offered at the Arboretum, you know they talk" at you" not with you, and much like the cat feeders can only see their side of the story. So while we were telling them we were against TNR for many reasons, they kept explaining WHY they needed to do it. Just like Nicole telling Council member Schmitt, " well no, we are not going to take the cat back it our policy to leave it there" I will go to my grave unable to understand the sheer stupidity and stubbornness of that vote. Go online and download the staff report, Mr. Adams did an outstanding job of explaining and providing examples of where this was a miserable failure, but the Council did not even read it. When I asked Councilman Ron Smith if he had read the comments on the various articles with people saying "please support the ban".. he smirked and told me " I don't read that stuff".
. Who did Mr. Lawson talk to that " explained the other side" cause there is "no other side" folks.... The rabies vax does not take hold for 28 days, the cats are dumped right into midst of rats, bats, skunks, coons and coyotes in less than 24 hours.... So what was explained to Mr. Lawson ? How did he come to the conclusion that was not a dangerous practice ? I think because it was easier than reading the CDC material given to him by legal council, same as Washoe County BCC. Do I now have to file a complaint against Sparks with the AG's office ? Is that what it will take, because Mr. Gammick's opinion has not been reversed. So just like WC only really a little worse.... because Sparks knew there is an existing complaint with the AG and now Sparks has acted against the advice of the Sparks City Atty. I guess the new breed of governing bodies is immune to lawsuits, because they sure act like it.....
So here is what you do, whether you are pissed off in Sparks or anywhere else in Washoe County. Document, document and then document some more. If you own the land, nobody has a right to cross it or use it without your permission. Post your property no trespassing ( allowing for employees, deliveries etc ) You have the right to post " NO FEEDING OF ANY ANIMAL UPON THIS PARCEL".. You don't need Sparks to do that for you, it would have been nice if they had the balls to do that , but they didn't so just post your property. If you see cats being fed on City property, document that, get a description of the persons, the car and the plate. If possible get a picture and make sure it's time stamped. Contact the City of Sparks and ask if that person has permission from the property owner ( City of Sparks ) to feed a colony there. If they do not, file a complaint.
Now if you own property, and the Colony is fed on your property, you have the right to contact a pest management company, or a licensed trapper and have the cat humanely trapped on your own land. It can also be humanely euthanized by wildlife standards on your land if you want to be certain the cat will not be back in a week. If you are a property management company such as many of these complex units are, get written documentation from the owner to contact and hire pest management. A reputable company will not take the cat to AC because they are not the owner, and they will not dump it in the desert, it will be destroyed. Remember this choice is ultimately up to the person dumping the cat. You've made it clear you want the colony gone, and they are trespassing, if they choose to continue, it's on them.
I know this will be a financial burden, but I can tell you this, you will only have to do it once.
I see no point in being petty with the council or the Mayor, they clearly wanted it gone, they didn't want to deal with it, failed to understand it had not been a problem before but is now. so deal with it yourself, but be humane and legal. I personally would not handle the cat, I would leave that up to the professionals Hope this helps. I am leaving the comments on " moderation" to allow for private communications with Oreo's readers.
I am grateful for Mr. Adams caring enough to spend much of his personal time on this, learning and sharing, sad it fell on deaf ears.
