We Welcome A New Director To Northern Nevada

Pet Network in Incline Village Nevada has a new leader, and boy you should hear the old guard. It is always hard when a new person comes on board, things get different; but in this case I think it is a big step in the right direction.
Pet Network is a rescue group complete with shelter, that in itself speaks well of the forethought & planning. It has also been under attack by the local blogger groupies. It is easy for rescues with no overhead to sit back and second guess those that are dealing with physical buildings and ( guess what ?) state laws. This agency has enjoyed a good reputation with responsible people for a long time. The new leader, Becky Goodman, comes with experience as a Maddie's Fund project manager, and looking over her last place of employment offers a good impression of her capabilites.
The plan to auction a purebred puppy at a fundraiser was almost bigger than the Angoura fire last year in the minds of the radicals. Now, I am not sure Oreo and I would approve of a puppy auction, but I don't see a big difference between that and the off site adoptions held so many other places. We're actually a little sad that it got changed to a sale, because this rescue is far to respected to defer to the whims of the bloggers. Anonymous commenters are not mainstream, and are fighting for dollars like everybody else, just slightly under the quality offered by Pet Network.
The biggest war cry I read, and there were many; was "what kind of an example was this" I didn't know it's (Pet Network ) divine purpose was to set an example. it's purpose as I understand it is to provide help for the animals, and $6,000.00 is helpful. This lady will never appeal to this group, and Oreo hopes she doesn't waste valuable time trying.
Our friends who live up there indicate the shelter has lost a little ground in it's physical condition. Perhaps the puppy sale can go towards providing a better shelter for less fortunate critters.
We are not a 5013c, we don't take a tax break, if we foster a puppy we give it away to a carefully selected home, after we have paid the vet bills and done the neutering. Oreo doesn't have any motive other that to be of service. Usually a grateful adopter will want to do " something" and we request they help the injured animal fund at Washoe County Regional Animal Services or donate to a charity of their choice. True charity doesn't come with strings. Oreo donates to a Pit rescue in Vegas, under cover of anonymity, through a friend who lives there; and tells us of their good work and high use of resources. A very gracious reader reminded me that Steve Ricker is still acting as a consultant to Pet Network; I take that as a good thing. Sorry for missing it earlier.

How Should A Blog Behave, Really ?

We read quite a few blogs here at Oreo's place and the truth is; I can see why some get a bad reputation. We work hard to avoid the cheap shot. It is easy to let controversy be the defining factor, but I have noticed classy blogs get plenty of hits without the hoopla. So, why would anyone stoop to slander ?
The final tone of it falls squarely on the Blog moderator, that is who sets the tone and the rules of engagement. Contrary to what some would have you believe , we are not victims of " nasty commenters". Reading the local dog blog is a lesson in what we don't want to be. It is small minded, cliqueish, and often runs contrary to the advice of professionals.
It claims to be
"okay "as it is just the bloggers opinion, but often the opinion takes the form of pretending to be news. When that runs under the banner of a newspaper it can give a credence that is not deserved.
We have a strong opinion here, no question of that. But we never go into a mob mentality, and the laws of inflamatory rhetoric apply to blogs. When a blogger incites such rancor as to create the potential for violence, or threaten the peace of mind or personal safety of those who disagree with their views, there is a consequence.
All blogs have an agenda, Oreo has one, and all blogs tend to gather a certain type of reader, but the responsibility for ethics falls on the moderator. End of story...... Like minded people have always found one another, but the freedom to say everything you may think, is not inclusive of libel and slander. Our area needs all animal groups to grow up and play nice with their little friends. People read the freak shows, but they don't help animals , & some blogs are a freak show, and nothing more. Like when a comedian says the F word and people laugh, but underneath they are a little uncomfortable. Nobody likes to wallow in mud but the piggies, and as long as they keep the dirt to themselves, few people care. So feel safe in posting here, this was designed as a place for intelligent people in the shelter industry to open up, present ideas and concerns, but we have drawn a large lay following too, and we cherish that.

Things I Have Learned From My Pack..

When loved ones come home, always run to greet them. Never pass up the opportunity to go for a joyride.
Allow the experience of fresh air and the wind in your face to be pure Ecstasy. Take naps. Stretch before rising.
Run, romp, and play daily. Thrive on attention and let people touch you. Avoid biting when a simple growl will do. (My personal favorite)
On warm days, stop to lie on your back on the grass. On hot days, drink lots of water and lie under a shady tree. When you're happy, dance around and wag your entire body. Delight in the simple joy of a long walk.
Be loyal. Never pretend to be something you're not. I f what you want lies buried, dig until you find it.
When someone is having a bad day, be silent, sit close by, and nuzzle them gently.
