When people are out of work and have no shelter,, keeping the family pet is often impossible. As much as you may love the animal, no home, no money, no food; let us be realistic. Every time I see some person spouting off " I would never give up my animal" or "I would live in the car with my animal" I know they have not yet faced the demon " poverty".
There are new concerns at NHS why did they get the deed rewritten on the old building to allow them to hold animals there, it was a land use change not approved by the zoning department. Nor does the building have staffing, correct air exchange and accessiblilty to view standards of care. What is the connection between the NHS and the start up Canine Rehabilitation place they are trying to get off the ground? All the dog pictured in the latters ad's are still in their NHS scarves amd the Canine Rehap place has no building, is this a set up to store long term dogs on the old parcel? I know that very few of us were allowed near the old building where the ringworm and ferals were kept.

That is why many of us are drifting away without notice. Nobody wants to be a part of keeping animals in a substandard building. The land use is a separate issue and would have to go through approval processes and the people of Washoe county have a right and the Nevada Humane Society has a moral obligation to tell the public if the animals they surrender are kept in that old abandoned building.
I have been helping Oreo and that group look for Stormy The Newfoundland and in California with the Hayden Act is in effect ;we have seen very little oversight for where these animals are forced to go. The idea that Stormy could be in some hellish rescue without any checks and balances keeps us going forward. At this point in time NHS has first right of refusal. That means they can go to your animal control and pull any animal they want and store in in a decrepit building as soon as it's stray is up. Might want to look at the old building and let this blog know if thats where you want your pet.. You might also want to look at the arrangement that allows such a group as NHS access to our helpless strays who have no voice
