Sometimes the girls just hang out and gossip. That is when the extra links appear !! One of the big plans of No Kill is "pet retention", that translates into a lot of grief ( hassle) when the time to surrender the pet arrives. We put in the Indianapolis link so you could see how other parts of the country feel about this. Several of the comments were right on, mainly the concern for the animal that is turned away.I have touched on that in earlier posts, but it is worth repeating. The decision by a person of integrity to give up the family pet is a difficult one, this group is usually under some type of pressure, money, neighbors vet bills. No amount of talking is going to help them, it will only make an awkward task more painful and the situation is beyond their control. For the people who should never have owned a dog in the first place; they will just dump the animal, or come back at midnight and tie it do the door. Use your resources for cleaning pens and giving love pat's ; isn't this picture so like the unsupervised staff of some shelters ? Very rarely will counseling help an owner retain their pets. The shelter is their last resort as a rule. They have called all the "rescue" (I called them adoption groups) groups and they are always full. Granted I think people give up their pets too easily but reality is that they do and think they have no choices. If they are turned away, just take it to the nearest open field and let it go. Then these counselors can pick it up as a stray or a dead animal. Plus it costs the taxpayer more to pick them up. It's a stupid idealistic fantasy that these shelters have that only ends up hurting the animal more than is necessary.
Adoptions groups is a good way to put it. I would have liked more breed information when we got our two, but if I had decided to return them I wouldn't have wanted any lectures.
If we hadn't been sent to the trainer.. or if she had charged us, it would be a different story. Some of us have good homes but we can't afford huge vet and training bills. The kids call her gramma, she calls both dogs Lovey. I don't think she can tell them apart. She thinks it will be a couple of months at the earliest until we can leave the house and they will be comfortable that we will come home. No lectures, take the dog and shut up.
