Maddie’s Fund, The Pet Rescue Foundation, is honoring these organizations with their Community Lifesaving Award in recognition of the 94 percent communitywide save rate for dogs and cats entering Washoe County animal shelters in 2010 and 2011. The agencies receiving funding from this award for their collaborative efforts and lifesaving successes include Pet Network Humane Society, SPCA of Northern Nevada, Washoe County Regional Animal Services, and Nevada Humane Society.
The Community Lifesaving Award of $1.3 Million is being divided between the four organizations based on pet adoption numbers for the three private shelters (Pet Network Humane Society, SPCA of Northern Nevada, and Nevada Humane Society) and on live releases for Washoe County Regional Animal Services. Pet Network Humane Society is receiving $100,000, SPCA of Northern Nevada is receiving $200,000, Washoe County Regional Animal Services is receiving $200,000, and Nevada Humane Society is receiving $800,000. These funds are to be used for the care of animals.

I shall begin my critique of this propaganda by first addressing the final ( italic ) paragraph. This donation is not a
" boost for the community" It's a thinly veiled bailout of the Nevada Humane Society. $800,000.00 is about half of what the Nevada Humane Society loses in one year. The deeply troubled NHS has been behind on it's bills for years and only recently became " current" to a mild degree.This is a matter of public record as the result of a recently completed audit. The County agency received $200,000, the same amount that much smaller ( 30 dog /30 cat ) shelters were given. it's an insult, not an appreciation.
There is no community that could/or would support this absence of good judgement. There are no
" generous individuals and businesses within the local community."
To be certain there is a small core of locals who are always willing to reach into their pockets, but major donors have backed away, and for good reason.
The article quotes the year 2010-2011 as being 94% community wide " save rate" total rubbish ! Rubbish, they should have shame to their grave over. The " Community wide" poppycock is to prop up the misleading information being spread about the Nevada Humane Society being successful. Animal Control always had one of the highest rates of return to owner, long before the regionalization took place. it's commonly known the "figures don't lie, but liars can figure" and the manipulation of numbers is rampant in these type of situations.
We have all heard how certain institutions are " to big to fail" that is how No Kill views the Nevada Humane Society, it's the only horse they have in the race and it's crippled. Maddie's Fund gave up on Spay Neuter donations because they ( Maddie's ) were running out of money. They now just hold up dying shelters to hide their failure to achieve " No Kill" I used to admire Avanzino, I felt he was a true ( somewhat misguided ) believer in the philosophy of the Assilomar Accords; now I think he is becoming part of the problem. Washoe County will take their $200,000, who wouldn't? But they are not fools and we all know what this is about . It's time for the County to find a new partner, although this old man thinks it wiser to travel the path of of animal control alone.
All over the country, these partnerships are falling like drunks in a subway station, they fall because they can no longer stand up; it's as simple as that.

If you go to the Maddie's Fund Lifesaving Awards page, you will see a couple of the other familiar NK names - Tompkins County, Charlottesville. They also have a page on Austin. It's clear that they want to try and sustain these NK communities who are hemorrhaging funds, so they can convince other communities to go down the same unsustainable road.
Mr. Avanzino lost my respect completely when he made the following speech. To say that community cats and owner relinquishments should be banned from animal shelters, while at the same time talking about how we are in recession with record foreclosures is just ludicrous. If shelters don't take the cats, the unemployed people that may eventually lose their homes are being burdened to spay/neuter these cats that, thereby shifting the burden onto those individuals. If individuals losing a home can't relinquish their animal, then the animal is either released into the public presenting a public safety issue or harm to the animal. It's a shame that the founder of Maddie's Fund, who was a businessman, can't see how that going away from spay neuter and down the Winograd road is fiscally unsound for most communities, and merely a short term solution that has no long range benefit like spay neuter does.

Maddie's Fund has lost their mind.I read a small story last year, the Duffield heirs were going to fight the parents insane wishes. I too noticed only communities that served the agaenda were receiving funding.
Spay / neuter has gone out the door in the senselss attempts to keep face. That ammount of money can salvage or corrupt, and only the corruptable are in danger. So they save the stupid NHS one more pathetic year. For what ? to put more cats on the street, to jam more dogs into unregulated " fosters" where they languish for years until go ccrazy.
I am a vet, I did not seek education to euthanize animal, I am not quick with the syringe, but I do believe in quality over sancity. I would like to hear from Oreo's Reno readers too. Stay away from SF with your money if you are going to poison the water.

Correction, it's not a sinking ship, the damn thing has been crawling along the bottom for 4 years. IThe BOD has been reckless with oversight and spending, which has resulted in loss of donor base. Look at Charity Guide, go to delawarecapa.blogspot.com and see the actual losses. These are not opinion polls, they are publicly available numbers. We must get this group away from the money tube. Why has no government official stepped to address the overcrowding and the stench that is in a government building. How do people spend a shift there ?
Although I agree about the stench, what can the County do? Is it the City of Reno or Washoe County who is responsible. I thought there was a Reno Task Force. @ Baywatch, I also agree with quality over sanctity. Many of those animals will never come out of the hell they are in, not going to ever be adoptable. Avanzino has gone over the edge now, he must be afraid of losing his job. It does look like they limit funding to their friends.
Hello Kirsten, long time since you have written to us. The County is the agency that would address the issues you mention. The Animal Control was only recently put under the Sheriff department. If you live in the Reno area you should go to the County Commission meeting on the 14 of August. There was an audit review of services and I know from personal experience that NHS is not happy with the results. They were delinquent on bills and not fulfilling their contract.
NHS got $800,000, huh? And they are giving $400,000 away as top prize in the up-coming Duch Race. They better hope they have rigged this race really well or they'll take a helluva hit financially.

I hope that some of Oreo's readers are connected to donors. The Nevada Humane Society has become a circus, a cruel joke that is making all of us look bad. Bonney is throwing animals out the door like they are her stupid rubber ducks. These are real animals, they have feelings and needs. It's not Macy's already !! I suspect the webpage is a lie, most of what she promotes is, but I do know they are not using money for the animals care. Those animals get virtually nothing for enrichment or medical. The only care they get is when they are briefly adopted. The NNSPCA is very open with their figures, NHS needs to quit hiding their problems and start dealing with them.
