Memphis Animal Services Gets The Goldilocks Syndrome...

This blog had high hopes for Mr. Rogers........And, then he started trying on chairs to see which one fit
" JUST RIGHT"  We hope he finds his own chair soon, the animals and staff are paying a high price for his arrogance and unwillingness to back up, and perhaps take an online course in shelter management.  He appears to be bounding to and fro on the "save em' all, euth em' all "
trail.  He may have sat in the Shirley chair a tad to long, he's started to make funny noises, like a No Killer, but euthanizing madly...We got our new shelter director at the same time as Memphis.  He too came from a strong management background, a great deal of experience in office details, but lacked knowledge in his new field.  Our guy decided to listen to people who did know.  Washoe County is blooming under the direction and care of Barry Brode. One can only hope that Memphis learns it's lesson soon.  The schizophrenic management style there is destroying all hope.of a normal shelter life. From the outside, first to admit I am not on the ground there, it looks like he is basing his decisions on Shirley's post of the day.  Over 300 animals have been pts in the past week, some by mistake; most because there were no choices other than that for those particular animals. Shelters did not create the over-population, but they do have to deal with it.
Recently in an attempt to appease a terrorist ( you would think Rogers could figure this out )  the use of come-a-longs was banned.  They call them choke poles at Shirley's place.  I think she finds the term tittilating...I shouldn't poke fun at the Biscuit, I wasn't raised to be mean to sick people, but damn she is such an easy target. There have been 3 employees bitten in just about as many days , Shirley hasn't FOIA any pictures showing Mr. Rogers moving fractious animals, and I don't think she will anytime soon....he doesn't live with his illogical decisions.   Please Mr. Rogers, grow a pair and send the Biscuit back to SC, and learn how to run a shelter, Every time I see one of your sniveling letters on Yes Biscuit I drop one more tear for your staff, volunteers, and your animals....

From what I have heard through the mud puddles, there were three technicians bitten. The result of these bites is that the control pole can now be used again in the shelter. No one but an IDIOT would assume you can capture a fractious dog, put it in a truck drive it to the shelter, and it magically turns into the leash trained pet when it arrives at the shelter. IDIOT THINKING!! Is Mr. Rogers personally liable when he is the one who made the STUPID decision? Someone should be accountable for these bites as they were made due to an idiotic decision that put the workers, public and volunteers at risk.

Arrogance and stupidity seem to be the norm for the Memphis Shelter Director. Who in their right mind would put their employees at risk of being seriously attacked? Sounds like a lawsuit to me! What if a member of the public were attacked? "Oh, we are sorry, but we don't use the rabies poles here; sorry about your child". What will it take for the "Postmaster" to get it? Dogs eat his kid??

I still do not volunteer at the shelter, but keep a close eye on things. We have two dogs right now we pulled from MAS about 3 weeks ago. I don't know how they determine what's to die and what isn't. One of our dogs had a hold on it and Roger's had put it on the euth list. A volunteer saved this dogs life by checking the kennel card. I don't know if I will ever be able to go into MAS but that doesn't keep me from helping where I can.
I am so sick of Shirley's rants and yet I'm starting to feel like Rogers is making things worse. Why would he put a good looking healthy dog on the euth list without checking to see if it had a hold ? Then he turns around and kisses Biscuit butt. Shirley has gone over the edge, she is not tied at all to real life, but why is Rogers giving her the time of day. It's chaos down there and the biscuit trolls are having way to much fun with it.

mas is decending into hell, it's time for Rogers to shape up or ship out. The place is being run by the biscuit, and she is not doing a good job.

RedheadedStepchild said...

The reason Rogers would put a good looking healthy dog on the euth list is that he's making the list from a printed kennel inventory that doesn't even contain photos of the animals.

He doesn't know what dogs are even there. He's a desk dude. I don't think he visits the dog area.

The dude Rogers has no clue what he is doing, and he cares even less. There was a dog in Healthy Hold cage 25a with an id number of 241693 that was euthanized even though there were notes in the computer for the dog that the owner was coming to pick up. Rogers just checked it for euth. without even checking anything else other than a kennel printout. The owner did show up to get their dog back and it was "gone".

Surely they were offered their "pick of the shelter" which is his way of saying "sorry". He has no clue that many people are not going to be appeased by a "replacement". The animals are just a commodity to him, and you just choose another if they kill yours. Empathy is just something that seems not to exist " the neighborhood".

Rogers signed off on the owned dogs getting euthed? Nice.

It's amazing to me how much Memphis under their Mr. Rogers is like Nevada Humane under Bonney Brown. Inept directers are always going to take a shelter to the bottom. I know that we have had ooops euth's at both NHS and WCRAS you would be hard pressed to find a shelter that hasn't, but it appears Mr. Rogers is not doing the correct protocol ever. He's trying to appease Shirley and Bonney is kissing Winograd's behind.

@ the kind person who offered to send pictures. For copyright reasons, Oreo only uses pictures created by " Designs by Oreo, Serenity Hill "
We have had a tremendous response from our Memphis readers and please feel free to comment. One doesn't need a Google account, simply select the circle next to the name/url line, when the little box pops up, sign in as you please so long as it's not vulgar or derogatory. .

@redheaded step-child are you saying that Mr. Rogers does not look at the dogs on the euth list personally ? I understand the kennel manager would make the selection, generally the shelter manager is not involved in that. However if Mr. Rogers is the one to sign the euthanasia list he should look at the animals and do a card check. Is he the designated person for that duty ? In our shelter the director would be considered micro-managing at that level of involvement. I'm trying to understand your infra-structure. Irregardless of title, the person who signs the list should view the animal.

MAS was without a kennel manager for a couple of months and is currently without an operations manager, so Rogers was making euthanasia lists during that time and may still be making them. Via inventory list and based on the intake date. That's how Nola got killed so soon. Her intake date said 5/3/12 in Chameleon. So her time was up based on that intake date.

I have been chewing on this one. He banned come a longs because of Yes Biscuits pictures. If you knew how stupid that sounds Mr. Rogers. My husband says they have to drag the dogs where he helps out because sometimes a dog doesn't want to go in a cage.
A pit bull can go from dragging to attacking in about 5 seconds. The reverse of fear is aggression. I did go read that wordpress. That is the most insane thing I have ever seen. Shel reads it, but I get put off the rhetoric. Shel has a much higher BS tolerance level than I do. The SPCA picks the dogs they want from AC or NHS common sense would say we're not going to pick a rough one. Bit sometimes with a long kennel time they do get contentious and so the are catch poles available.

What bothers me most is the excessive amount of staff (and sometimes volunteer) time that is being dedicated to escorting one specific fired volunteer through the kennels. She spends most of the day there every Saturday, which means being down one more staff member when it comes to getting real work done (like, you know, vaccinating and heartworm testing dogs that people are interested in adopting). In recent weeks she has taken to exiting and re-entering the building as if she's trying to get back into the kennels with someone who doesn't know who she is. It happened this past Saturday, and Jody's atrocious behavior had one of our best volunteers near the point of a meltdown. Rogers is enabling this behavior, and IMHO if he wants to let this continue, he needs to spend his Saturdays at the shelter escorting her. Or grow some balls and put an end to this problem. Either way works for me.

Would that make two of us in agreement that a pair of testicles would be a nice addtion to the new building ??

The Fisher Follower said...

If testicles are out of the question, a spine would be nice. Especially one strong enough to stand up to the biscuit and the minion Memphis noodles who follow and cower to her biscuit box. Rogers is letting these creatures dictate his micromanaging of the shelter which is total insanity. The euthanasia rate is soaring for no other reason than his incompetence. TOTAL INCOMPETENCE.

Trying to manage any shelter by someone's personal standards is ludicrous.I read Yes Biscuit, she is similar to the King County Exposed winette that we had. He needs to learn to ignore them and focus on his own damn shelter.
