Every one's talking about Austin's failure but the endless stream of " shock and awe" from bystanders to the fallout is surprising.....
I mean really people, have we seen a No kill not fail ? If this is a piece of news, we all need to get a life. Of course the whiners are going to blame location, completely overlooking the fact that with TLAC still in the original location, should have been a snap to push those puppies out through an old familiar door. After all, if we can "transport" across country, should be able to get the extra live load across town. The truth is Tomkins was in crisis when Abigail left to take over Austin, and at that time we all thought she was in for a rude awakening. Lot's more animals and no Cornell Vet school. Nathan did his best to pad the way providing explanations for failure, complaining early on about the move. If the old shelter was such a sucess, why did they need a new one?
What about the imports ? Surely they are to blame......Nope, even though I am not a fan of transport, the 20 dogs APA brought from San Antonio didn't steal homes from the 17 unadoptables on Lavender Loop, and offstie adoptions wouldn't have helped either. Austin has reached community saturation, every area does. No Kill counts on the first blush of sucess by filling every foster and rescue to the brim, the damn brim I tell you. Since twice as many dogs are pushed out the door into fosters as go into permanent homes, when the fosters are full; the party is over. Incredibly simple, really. I've often wondered where the fosters put them.
I have noticed on No Kill forums the minions are screaming to " seal the borders" just stop taking in from the public. Let's ask Washoe County how that's working for them :)
In Southern Nevada the Animal Foundation was given the funding needed to keep several well run shelters going for a long time,almost 20 million, 12 million of that from Janie Greenspun Gale who ran the place...right into the ground. Janie's sad statement was, "she tried to run a shelter like a rescue" 1,000 animals had to be destroyed and all animals are now put down in 72 hours.
Had they used that funding to operate a shelter in a balanced manner the holding period could be longer and the money would have been better used to serve a broader base.
"She never anticipated having to spend this kind of money, she said, and admitted she did not know how much she had spent over the years on the foundation.

The No Kill Nut Jobs would like to forget Lied's, just as Nixon always wished Watergate would go away..that's not the way American tragedies work. Lieds was about a lack of judgement coupled with a lack of knowledge, animals died in horrible ways after being hoarded in overcrowded conditions. It happened again in Philly, Indianapolis. it's being hidden in Washoe County, and hundreds of smaller No Kill shelters are in trouble, deep trouble. As long as politicans grab a photo-op, failing to do dilligent homework on projects that look " to good to be true" the animals will suffer. Austin is the latest, have you the courage to make it the last ?

You also have to wonder how bad are things going in Manatee. When they start post pages that say "We Do Not Want To Be Killed", I have to suspect that they may be the next one to start the weekly begging and pleading that will eventually be ignored. As I've stated elsewhere. we all remember the story of the boy who cried wolf from our childhood. Like so many stories, they are meant to teach us. I guess the NK crowd just didn't understand it.
Austin has lasted a fair amount of time due to a generous budget and lowered standards of housing animals. APA or AHS cannot take every pitbull, nor should they. I alsays urge people to go to Oreo's sidebar and read "Another Very Nice Dog" some breeds do not kennel well and pitbull types are in that group. Mr. Winograd is trying to blame the location while taking great liberties with Nevada geography. The man is a complete fool and a liar.
What is left out of the rhetoric is that SF was never the type of no kill he is trying to sell now. He has romanced the reality of our shelter, as he does everything.
Boy Howdy did the Wino show his ignorance on that post. Did you see Honesty covered it to? It's like now that Austin's cracks are showing he has to pull Reno out of the hat again. We have 17 communities ? Only if they are comprised of jackrabbits. Our shelter, listed as one of the biggies, has 9 dogs right now. How's that for making a dent in overpopulation ? Our reputation as the original no kill shelter is backed up by dogs that have been here for years and think this is " home" Read the label on the black chow mix, poor guy came in wild and has been in custody for about 3 years .
Sometimes it feels like Rogers is flirting with NK, we are so full. Austin is not a surprise, but the Biscuit sure is upset. Just think, Memphis could have had a sucess story like Austin. People forget, we offered to let people come up with a new way and nobody showed up. There is a new local FB page called No Gravy take a look at some of the dogs on there and ask yourself where Shirley is now ? These dogs need her.

Do a search for Stockton plus animal, and educate yourself about what is right over the hill from you. Memphis you can take a break :)
Our former director is now at Stockton and under serious attack. She is a good director who stood up to the loons and now they are after her. Sincerely a more vicious group of individuals would be difficult to find, save the west coast before Nevada becomes the beach.

I've been in touch with a few readers from central California and they are watching the fledgling PetsAlive chapter like a hawk. This is all rhetoric from his semianr recently. Together they couldn't come up with one good idea, but they can sure be defensive. Stay safe, these are crazy, reactive fools and should be treated as such. Christ died on the cross so you didn't have to remember ? That's what you tell me.
I feel a kind of pity for Smith, I think she believes on some level that it can be done. The toll her lack of judgement is taking in Austin is to much though; and she isn't paying it; animals are. Once TLAC begins selling space to other shelters she is doomed. Of course the mission is doomed anyway because it's based on faulty logic. How is my Velvet Gret?
I have 5 very nice GSD's taken from a backyard breeder. They are in poor conditon but excellent temperment. I hope to have them spayed and ready for new homes in about 2 month's. Three familes had already called the shelter saying they wanted one, but the trick is to get them fixed up. To often the public wants to breed the dogs, we don't want that.
